NATURE OF GOD
Feb 13, 2012
The Westminster catechism gives the following definition of God, “There is but one only living and true God, who is infinite in being and perfection, a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will, for his own glory, most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him; and withal most just and terrible in his judgments; hating all sin; and who will by no means clear the guilty.” Of course this is a detailed definition but it does not give us the source of the terms used though believed it is from the scriptures.
The following analysis gives us the source of some definitions though not exhaustive.
Exodus 3:1-15- In this passage, God is represented by the angel of the Lord. What is faceable is a flame in burning bush and a voice equivalent to human voice saying “I am God of your fathers. I am” Besides the flame and the voice Moses did not see any form of a being.
Psalm 103 – This passage describe the nature of God according to His actions. He is a redeemer, merciful and a healer. He is worth of praise.
Isaiah 6 – Isaiah tell us that he saw God seated on a throne. Here though not clearly faceable God takes a form which can be seen with human eyes. The setting is in a temple which was filled with the glory of God and main activity is worship. He has a concern for his creation.
Ezekiel 1 – Ezekiel saw a cloud, lightening, shining metal, fire and appearance of a man. He defines this as the glory of God.
John 3:16; 4:1-24 – God loves the world He is spirit.
Acts 17:16-34 – God is creator of heaven and earth.
Romans 1: 18-32 – God has revealed himself to mankind.
Romans 3:1-20 – He is God of all people though he has revealed Himself to the Jews in a special way; He gave them the law.
1 John 3:1, 16-24; 3:7-21 - This passage echoes John 3:16 and demonstrates the extent of his love- Jesus laid down his life for us.
Revelation 4 – John saw God seated on a throne. Again main activity in the temple is worship. This vision resembles Ezekiel and Isaiah vision.
By understanding His nature, we are able to appreciate who He is and we can worship him who is God alone.
As we continue to study the word of God we should be guided by the following verse I Deuteronomy 29:29 ‘The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
